HAND-CRAFTED ANTIQUE IVORY JEWELRY Enjoy owning a piece of musical history in ivory! Each piece is hand carved from the natural ivory used to cover antique piano keys. Beginning in the 1700’s, ivory was used on some of the most sought-after pianos of the time and commonly portrayed prestige or status in the home. PIANO IVORY The ivory used in MusicNotes Jewelry is pre-embargo ivory collected from antique pianos. The sale of ivory in any form can only be transported within the United States in limited quantities. Piano building began in America in 1775, with the “black” keys made from ebony and the “white” keys made generally of spruce covered with a veneer of natural ivory. Each piece of ivory is unique in its grain and color, taken from grand or upright grand pianos produced by such makers as Steinway, Chickering and Baldwin to name a few. The last Steinway piano known to use ivory was built in 1982. Each ivory piece is carefully removed from the piano key, gently cleaned, then had carved to create one-of-a-kind pendants for necklaces, earrings and bracelets.
